Antibiotic Prophylaxis: Who Requires Antibiotics Prior To A Dental Procedure?
Bacteria exists in the mouth at all times (even in the healthiest of mouths). At any given time there are thousands of bacteria growing inside the oral cavity. Chewing, flossing, drinking, eating and even brushing can all disrupt that bacteria. Undergoing a dental procedure can also disrupt bacteria. In a healthy person, they can fend off bacteria without an issue. In a patient that has an immunological issues, it can be harder to fight off. To maintain your health and prevent the transmission of diseases, undergoing antibiotic prophylaxis may be necessary.
WHAT IS ANTIBIOTIC PROPHYLAXIS?
Antibiotic prophylaxis is the practice of taking antibiotics before a medical treatment to reduce the chances of complications from infections. Antibiotic prophylaxis is not the best treatment for every dental patient, and antibiotics are only recommended when the likely benefits outweigh the possible risks of taking them.

The most recent recommendations from the American Dental Association regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis before any routine dental procedure include (but are not limited to):
- Routine extractions
- Fillings
- Root canals
- Crowns
- Extractions
- Dental cleanings
