Teen Dental Care
Teen dental care is especially important, as it establishes good practices that should be learned now and carried over into adulthood. The teen years are especially vital as they mark a period in which tooth decay can advance quite rapidly. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, cavities for this age group still remain the highest for those of any age group. Parents should not be afraid to hassle their kids to properly brush their teeth, eat well, and go to the dentist office when necessary. Teens should combat cavities before they begin. For one, eating a well-rounded diet with plenty of vegetables and protein can reduce tooth decay. Sugar is one of the primary causes of tooth problems, and one should moderate their intake accordingly. Sugar treats that stay in the mouth for a long time, such as hard candies or bubble gum, can be especially hard on tooth enamel. Soda consumption should also be tightly controlled, as this is a primary culprit in both tooth decay and many other illnesses. While many teens are hungry all the time, they should avoid midnight snacks or eating sugary food before bedtime. Teenagers, like adults, should always brush properly. That means brushing twice a day for two to three minutes in short strokes, ideally at a 45-degree angle. Brushing too hard can cause damage to the gums, so brushing should be gentle. Individuals should also brush the back of their teeth and tongue as well, as plaque can build up in these areas. Teens should also be flossing at least once a day to clear out plaque between teeth or braces. Ultimately teens are trying to establish independence, which means parents should be firm about making sure their kids are following proper dental care. Finally, it is important that teenagers go to a dentist office once every six months, as recommended by the American Dental Association. In addition to teeth cleaning, there they can receive orthodontic services if they need braces or other dental procedures. Additionally, when teenagers have chipped or discolored teeth, a good dentist can apply new treatments to improve their smile, leaving them more confident in the long run. By following the guidelines above, teens should be able to keep their teeth clean while also feeling better socially and physically. Good dental hygiene is always something to smile about.
